Starting hourly home care is an important step, and it’s natural to feel a little uncertain about how that first visit will go. At In-Home Care, we understand the emotions involved—both for the person receiving care and for family members. Our aim is to make sure everything feels calm, clear, and reassuring from the very start.
Whether your loved one needs help with personal care, household tasks, or simply enjoys having some friendly company, here’s what you can expect on day one.
Before the Carer Arrives
Ahead of the first visit, we’ll already have spoken with you and carried out a home assessment. This helps us get to know your loved one and understand exactly what kind of support they need. Together, we’ll build a personalised care plan so that everyone knows what to expect.
You’ll already have a clear idea of when the carer is due to arrive, what tasks they’ll be helping with, and whether any medication support is required. You’ll also have contact details for our care team in case you have any last-minute questions. We’ll make sure the home is set up to support the care being delivered safely and comfortably.
When the Carer Arrives
First impressions matter, and we take care to make that first visit feel friendly and reassuring. Your carer will arrive at the agreed time, introduce themselves, and show their ID badge. They will never rush the visit or dive straight into tasks without checking in first.
They’ll review the care plan with you and ask if anything has changed since the initial assessment. The first few moments are about building trust and setting the tone for future visits. If your loved one feels nervous or unsure, the carer will take their time and work gently at their pace.
What the Carer Will Do
The carer will follow the care plan you’ve helped create. Depending on what’s needed, this may include:
- Helping with washing, dressing, or using the toilet
- Making meals or drinks
- Tidying up or doing some light cleaning
- Reminding your loved one to take medication
- Offering companionship and conversation
Everything will be done respectfully, with the carer always checking in to make sure your loved one feels comfortable. If there’s anything they would prefer to be done differently, we welcome feedback at any time.
Settling In
The first day of care is just the beginning. Some people take to it right away, while others may need a few visits to feel fully at ease. That’s completely normal. What matters most is starting to build a relationship based on trust and consistency.
We aim to send the same carer for each visit whenever possible, as we know how important familiarity is. Over time, the carer will get to know your loved one’s routines, preferences, and personality—all the small details that help care feel personal and reassuring.
If for any reason you feel a different carer might be a better fit, just let us know. We’re here to make sure the arrangement works for everyone.
After the Visit
Once the visit is complete, the carer will record what took place during the visit. This includes the tasks carried out, any medication reminders given, and any observations that may be useful. If you’ve opted for digital records, you’ll be able to access this information in real time.
We’ll also follow up with you to hear how the first visit went. If anything didn’t go quite as expected or if you’d like to make adjustments to the care plan, we’re happy to discuss it. Clear, open communication helps us keep providing the highest level of care.
Keeping Things Flexible
We understand that care needs can change. Whether your loved one starts needing more support or would prefer a slightly different schedule, we’re here to help make that transition easy. Just give us a call and we’ll talk through your options.
Our goal is to take the stress out of arranging care, so you can focus on what matters most—your loved one’s comfort and peace of mind.
